TURF-Reserve Design Tool
There are currently 27 or more TURF-reserves from ten countries that span the globe, and additional fisheries around the world are working to implement them. In particular, communities in nearshore fisheries in the developing tropics are establishing TURF-reserves as part of Fish Forever, a global initiative between Environmental Defense Fund, Rare, and the Sustainable Fisheries Group at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
In order for TURF-reserves to be effective, however, they must be designed to meet the unique biological, social, and economic characteristics and goals of a given locality. With support from the Fish Forever partners, a team of students from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management developed a TURF-Reserve Design Tool (TURFtools) to support TURF-Reserve spatial design in small-scale fisheries. TURFtools is an easy-to-use Microsoft Excel-based tool that allows managers in data poor fisheries to compare the expected performance of proposed TURF-Reserve designs in terms of ecological and economic outcomes. By improving the TURF-Reserve design process, TURFtools aims to empower fishers to better manage their resources to increase catch, improve marine ecosystem health, and achieve a more secure economic future.
