Fishery Performance Indicators
Measure the performance of a fishery in order to understand the impacts of a fishery reform project
What does it do?
Fishery practitioners can use the outputs of the tool to help determine fishery performance across indicators and identify aspects of the fishery that can be improved based on low metric scoring.
How does it work?
Many fisheries have some biological or landings information but very few fisheries around the world have robust social and economic information on how fishing benefits are earned and distributed within communities. Measuring the ecological, economic and social performance of fisheries is important for understanding the sustainability of fish stocks and the communities and industries that depend upon them. Many tools have been developed to support measuring and evaluating fishery performance. The Fishery Performance Indicators (FPIs), developed by Anderson et al.*, are a flexible assessment tool designed to assess the state of individual fisheries in terms of ecological, economic and social performance. The FPIs can build a holistic understanding of the performance of a fishery and the communities it supports.
How can it help you?
With the FPIs, fishery practitioners can:
- Assess ecological, economic and community-based performance of individual fisheries based on 68 individual metrics and expert input.
- Conduct comparisons across similar fisheries to determine what makes a fishery and/or management structure successful with respect to fishery or program goal.
- Determine how a fishery is changing over time with any potential management changes.
